NIDC Updates on Solar and Fish Cannery Projects

New Ireland Development Corporation (NIDC) has begun the process to acquire part portions 956 and 958 of vacant State land in Kavieng for a multi-project development.

With the blessing of the Provincial Executive Council, the government through NIDC plans to launch a Solar Power Plant, a fish cannery, and related real estate developments, plans outlined by the Board earlier this year become a reality.

The move marks a key milestone in NIDC’s plans for energy reliability, local fisheries capacity, and economic growth for New Ireland.

“Investors are prepared to move forward,” said NIDC Managing Director Christian Tarkap, who welcomed the Lands and Physical Planning team in Kavieng.

“Investors are ready to kick off the projects; however, land has been a setback. With the groundwork now progressing, the dream of better opportunities for the people of New Ireland is within reach.”

Mr. Tarkap said the ongoing collaboration involved coordinated efforts between NIDC and the Department of Lands and Physical Planning to ensure compliance and due diligence in the step-by-step process of acquiring portions 956 and 958.

The technical Lands and Physical Planning team, including Jason Komet (Compliance Manager, State Land Division), Simon Thomas (Deputy Chief Physical Planner), Elizah Zamzai (Senior Cartographer), Steven Kandaki (Land Allocation Officer, NGI), and Deborah So’onwai (Titles Division), are conducting the necessary initial work including site inspections and zone planning and subdivision. Together with NIDC officers will navigate through regulatory processes to secure timely approvals from the Land Board.

Mr. Tarkap expressed appreciation for the team’s progress and diligence and extended his appreciation to the Secretary for Lands and Physical Planning Benjamin Samson.
